How can we promote CREATIVITY, ORIGINALITY and INNOVATION in our studies, research/work and daily life?

1.Is creativity innate and inborn? Or can it be cultivated?

2. If YES, How can we be more creative, original and inventive with respect to our work/studies/research/daily life?

3. My dad says that just hard, focussed work and deep knowledge is necessary to be creative. (Edison’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration formula). Do you agree?

(source – Recently went through a research based Masters degree and was pretty frustrated at the end with the little amount of original and creative work I came up with for my thesis. Also, life (am working now) seems to be quite linear and monotonic nowadays. Hence, I want to know, how people out there are inventive, how they come up with original ideas and results, and how they are more creative in general.

Please give your ideas, views and suggestions. Thanks!

Actually sometimes the more you think about stuff and try to be creative, inventive and innovative, the more it eludes you. I’m doing masters by coursework, and just writing essays is making me feel like I can’t write anything different from the stuff that I’m reading, so it’s just quote after quote after quote…. and then my lecturer publishes an article that is basically the format that I was planning, which leaves me feeling….guess what I was doing today? But seriously, the less you think about it, the more spontaneous and satisfying the creativity.

I think it’s both – some people are truly born creative, and that’s just the way they’re wired; however, linear thinkers can expose themselves to different innovative activities and influences to build the habit of thinking creatively. It can take an act of determination for highly linear thinkers, as “going outside the lines” can be a very uncomfortable process.

Honestly, I’ve found that coming up with a way to teach it to someone else triggers my creativity. When I’m stuck in a rut, I take a bit of time out (maybe 20-30 minutes or so) and search for ways to teach _______ (whatever I’m researching) to anyone I choose – a child, a senior citizen, someone I’m training, a colleague. This usually gets my creative juices flowing and allows me to look at my research in a whole new light.

I don’t think that only hard, focused work will do it; Edison was an incredible out-of-the-box thinker to begin with, and saw patterns that nobody else did. He didn’t approach his work using strict scientific methods; rather, he just plain wasn’t afraid to fail and tried things that others dismissed as trivial or useless. He did work extremely hard, but that didn’t fully account for his success – others worked as hard as he did, but didn’t see the possibilities that he did.

I really believe that we need to plan to be creative.

In case someone naturally is creative and innovator, it is because he/she started the plan very early in life, before he/she even know to speak/walk, but made exploration habit(natural in every human being) a continuation in his/her future life.

At begining nothing will happen, but later you will start to act normally and with creativity. if you want to do something differently, first you need to know what is out there. Need research (deep or not) and than start from there.

A little brain storm or mind map will help to cultivate different ideas and will free your brain to navigate in different seas and come up with unusal solutions or situations, or ideas that seems to be original and with innovation somehow. You may think of a regular stuff (not novel at all) like a pic-nic and plan it in an uncommon place with different stuff (instead of hot-dogs and eggs) with different people than your relatives or closest friend. You may plan a game that you would never play at home or with people you want to show-up like “smarter” than they are. you can turn into a silly person, but you need to uncover your masks to be original, creative and innovative.

Example: a pic-nic in a ranch of yours or friend, with macarroni and cheese cooked on a fire (you need to bring your pots), with fresh squeezed natural orange juice, and play monopoly or build a 1000 pieces puzzle with the group.
