Make sure to preview the assignment (look at all the pictures, graphs, maps, etc., read the headings, read any sidebars, read the questions at the end of the assignment). Make up questions that you want to have answered as you read. Take active notes as you read. Write down all unfamiliar words and look them up when you get to a good stopping place. Stop at the end of every section to make sure you understand. Answer the questions you wrote about each section. Review, review, review. In other words, use the SQ3R method. It is old, but it works.

1. I suggest jotting down notes in your own handwriting, on index cards, or in a notebook, wherever is convenient.

Highlighting does not cause you to process language in the same way as actually writing things down. Just make a list called important points from Chapter 6 or something.

2. Take breaks and look away from the page and try to respond to yourself, “What is the author’s main point?”

(besides seeing his name in print)

3. Don’t read late in the evening if you could read earlier in the day. Sometimes it is unavoidable. But if you make reading a low priority you will do it at odd times instead of best times. Imagine that you are paying yourself to “go to your reading job.” Because basically you probably are, considering what tuition costs these days.

Good luck!

I had the same problem as an undergrad. It took me three years to realize that I was a visual learner. I started taking notes while I read. Outline the chapters. This will help you visualize the concept being delivered. Also, with math or science courses, I suggest doing as many practice examples as you can.
