How can I get the info. from university my kid attended in Canada?

I have invested in an Ontario -RESP fund for her education. She spent two years fulltime but she would not give me any info. I cannot get the money back but I would like to know what she has done during that time. She is working now and said she wants to go back to university but not that one. She said she cannot get her credit transfer either and that she wil start back from first year. She lies a lot but I would like to know the truth. The university will not give any info. to me cause she is an adult.

Oh boy, you’re in a tough position. You won’t get any information from the Canadian University because in both Canada and the United States, providing such information without your daughter’s consent would result in the school breaking the law. Have you tried contacting the holders / managers of the Ontario-RESP fund you invested in? I’m not sure how it works up in Canada, but I can get information out of my own child’s financial institutions in the United States because my name is on the original paperwork as co-signer or contributor (my contributions are in both names because I opened the fund prior to my child turning 18). I would think (hope) that since you invested in the Ontario-RESP fund, you could find out at least where the money went or what it was used for at your daughter’s university. I truly have no idea if the financial aid wheels turn differently between our countries, but if you haven’t already tried, it might be worth a shot. I’m very sorry for what you’re going through. Best wishes to you from one mother to another.

Colleges and universities in North America do not permit just anyone to receive a student’s transcripts. Even a prospective employer must obtain the student’s or former student’s written permission to release their transcripts. Every school has their own form where the requester must obtain the student’s written release.

You did not mention it, but it sounds like your daughter is asking you for financial aid to return to college and you want to know the outcome of the first two years of the assistance that you gave her. You can not go back and change the past, but you should have made it a stipulation that her grades get reported to you if you were giving her financial aid. There are forms which the schools do provide where this can be done.

You could make it a condition of your giving her financial aid a second time that she first authorize you to receive her first two year’s transcripts. It would appear that her performance wasn’t very good. She may have earned zero credits eligible for transfer to a second school or too many years have lapsed since last attending school to allow them to be eligible for transfer (the time limit is 10-20 years depending, upon the school and the program where she wants the credits transfered to).

You also said that she lies a lot. So, perhaps you should demand these conditions if you’re to help her a second time.

Many students do better a second time at attending college. It’s probably the age and experience factor.

I wouldn’t be paying for any more college for her. You paid for the first run at it, she’s on her own now. It’ll make her grow up a little bit.

The college can’t give you her information. You could “extort” the information from her and tell her that the only way you’ll pay for anything is to see her transcript from the last school and the course plan for the new school. No reason why you can’t lie to her. She probably flunked out of it the first time which is why she’s keeping it from you.

JMO, but it does not sound like she went to the school and if she did she did not finish. The reason I think this is because she is saying she is going to start over first year. Anyone that has worked for a year to get were they are is not going to willingly start over if there is a way for them to get the information and start from were they ended the year.

You can not get this information. The university is correct. They can’t give it out to you. They can only give it to the student, or to people that the student has, in writing, said it’s okay to give that info to.
