How can I become a party planner?

Ever since I was little, I never knew what I wanted to do with myself for a job. All the other kids knew what they wanted to be but I never did. As I approached my Junior and Senior year of high school, I still had absolutely no clue. I ended up doing one year in college but couldn’t decide what to major in. Nothing really interested me enough. I ended up leaving college (bad decision, I know) and I am now 22 yrs old and I work at an ambulance company doing the insurance end of it. I recently had an epiphany! I finally know what I want to do with my life! I want to be a party planner/wedding planner. I love putting events together and I want to know what are the first steps in becoming a professional party planner?

The official title is “event planner” and if you want to be a good one, you will want to be certified. There are several outlets for getting certification. There are professional wedding consultant schools. The Association for Certified Professional Wedding Consultants has one such school. Their site can be found at:

www.acpwc.com

If you want to do large events like conventions and corporate meetings, you may want to pursue a degree in hospitality management. Many community colleges offer certfifications in this growing field. And, it only takes about a couple of years to complete. To get hands on training, the best thing to do is to apply to work at a hotel. The catering department is the best way to get practical first hand knowledge in the field.

Hope this helps to get you started and good luck.
