Make a list of everything that makes up who you are–your activities, your personality, your goals and dreams, your family, etc. Try to remember things that other people have said about you. Even if you don’t think you’re interesting, you will see a person emerging from this list of facts and statements. From there, you’ll be able to answer the question, “Who am I, anyway?” You might even want to include your soul-searching for identity in your essay, beginning with something like this:

Who am I? It’s a question I’ve been asking long before I sat down to write this admissions essay. I guess what I’ve learned is that I am a work in progress–I am a collection of hobbies, skills, experiences, and DNA that make me Nathan (or whatever your name is) and nobody else. I am a unique being, encapsulated in a unique body, walking around amongst millions of other unique beings–none of us the same.

And then you could go on to talk about some of your talents and hopes.

Or something like that. Just be honest. Pretend you’re one of your friends, and someone has asked him what you’re like. What would your friend answer? That’s the type of stuff you should write in your essay.

Start by telling a little about yourself. What have you accomplished so far in life? Why do you want to attend this particular university. In what way will attending this particular university assist you in meeting your life goals?

Be sure to have someone look over your essay prior to submitting it. You don’t want to submit something with spelling and/or grammatical errors.

Your best bet is probably to have one of your english teachers in high school review it both for content and accuracy.

Best of luck to you in your future educational endeavors,
