History, English, or Social Science degree?

Any thoughts on these degree programs, what types of jobs you can get besides teaching (though teaching might be an option), which degree would be the most difficult, which is more marketable, etc. I know there are people out there that think any one of these degrees would be useless, but they are the ones that I’m most interested in.

If you go to a good Liberal Arts and Sciences college, any one of those degrees should help you get a good job because you will take classes in a variety of subject areas that will make you well-rounded. Plus, there should be an emphasis on reading and writing skills that are needed in any job. From my understanding there are some jobs/businesses that don’t care what your degree is in as long as you have a college degree. However, of the three you listed, some might think an English degree is better because they would assume that you would know how to communicate well.

If you do consider teaching as a career field, English is also more in demand than history or social sciences. Social studies teachers are a dime a dozen! (I know because I train future social studies teachers and we are NOT a demand field like English, math, science, and special education.)

You can also consider a double major – social sciences and English. That’s what I had and it came in handy when I was a public school teacher.

Hope that helps!

heres the fasinating thing with degrees… you dont have to stay in your field of study once you hit the job market! A degree basically, to an employer, means you can make long-term commitments and that you have the ability to learn.

My sister (the doctor) was an english major. My father (the lawyer) was a business major. My mother (designs telephone systems) started off as a PE major. See my point!!?

I personally am NOT going to vote for the history degree, because very few people can make history interesting for long periods of time. English is good, punctuation and grammer and such. Social science is good… its universal.

Honestly, with your course choice, ?it’s a bit difficult to get job. Nevertheless English would be better if u like to be a teacher.
