Do any college students feel the same way? what do you do to fix it?

I don’t know what to do. I am very depressed because I can’t seem to pass any of my classes this semester, last semester I had all A’s and a B. I can’t seem to concentrate, I can’t memorize anything, and all I can think of is how bad I am doing. I have tried studying for hours, but it is not working.

I am considering dropping out of college, but I am halfway to get my B.S. I hate the school I am in, I am not happy being there and making bad notes makes it even worse.

Oh hon, do not give up all hope. Things are not doomed as it may seem. I was in the same boat with you 2 years ago. Mine turned out to be from a perfectionist attitude. I thought that if I got anything less than a 3.5 gpa that I was a loser and would never make it into graduate schooling. This way of thinking was making depressed and soon I had no motivation to even get out of bed. I would force myself to wake up in the morning and go to my classes and do all the studying, but my negative attitude persisted and I wasn’t getting strong grades. I also hated the school I was at, but I finished out that year and then I moved in the summer and started college elsewhere. I really like the school I am at and I also started therapy and taking Celexa to help with anxiety and depression. Yes, therapy can be hard, but I learned new ways to handle stress and new ways of thinking about college and my life in general. I do not put so much pressure on myself anymore and I am actually getting very good grades now!

Some things for you to consider. Good luck!

Please take advantage of the resources that should be available on your campus. You pay big bucks to go to school, and part of those fees pay for student services on campus, so get your money’s worth by visiting a doctor on campus or the counseling center. Tutoring services should also be available so if you feel like you are behind; check that out as well. Do you have an assigned advisor or a professor you would feel comfortable talking to? Perhaps the advisor or professor would have some good suggestions as well. If you feel like you aren’t going to pass your classes, be sure to withdraw from them so you don’t have the Fs on your transcript. If you are really miserable at your school, start shopping around for a new place to go, although be prepared for some classes not transferring to the new school.

Also, can you talk to your parents? If you feel like you have a good relationship with your parents, tell them how you are struggling so they can give you some moral support and/or get you some help if you can’t get help on campus. I

Life’s too short to be miserable! Good luck!

Don’t drop out. If you hate the school, then that’s the problem. Finish the semester, then find where you can possibly transfer to. Try other studying habits. Maybe off campus at a nearby library. And don’t think negatively. If you do that, then you’ll never do good. And figure out is there something else going on with you?

Don’t drop out of college. You’re almost there–why give up now?

Plan a trip over Christmas or Spring break. Get out there! Next semester find some classes that would be FUN for you to take, not just classes you HAVE to take.

Figure out a goal (ie. to make $50K your first year, etc) and work for it!

Try talking to a psychiatrist. My school had free counseling with our insurance. I had a similar problem recently – turned out I just needed anti-anxiety meds for a few months. Cleared right up, and I’m back to my studying.
