High school students HELP a teacher….?

I am a high school biology teacher trying to make my classroom “innovative” and fun. What kind of projects would be really cool for you guys, or have your teachers done that were really cool?

Bio wasn’t very fun for me in 9th grade but I bet that a lot more labs would work. I know chem is a more lab-ish science but Chem got my attention because it had at least 1 lab a week. They’re fun and kids look forward to them more than a bunch of book work.

I’m taking bio right now because I’m a sophomore, and personally, think it would be cooler if you show’d more examples of stuff like on the board. Like to explain it more. But that’s besides the point. But during the first week, our teacher was telling us about molecules. He took a coffee… What’s it called… container? The big kind. Anyway, he took that and cut a hole in the bottom in the middle and a little triangle between the plastic cover, so that he could fill it up with gas. (We have gas faucet-like things that let out some kind of flammable gas in our rooms, so that’s how he would stick the gas in, is through the triangle). He then flipped it over so that the triangle side is on the bottom and lit the gas that was coming out of the top. It lit, like a candle, and burned for a while. Then once the last of the gas was done and the oxygen (I think) wanted out, it exploded! Like, popped, actually, but it was pretty cool.

Another one was he was talking about how water absorbs a lot of energy, so he filled up a balloon with water and held it to an open flame. No, first he filled a balloon withair and held it to an open flame. It popped. But the one with water didn’t. So now I know know water absorbs energy.

And the last one is more of an example, but when he was talking about hydrogen bonds, he referred to them as people running at each other, trying to catch pinkies. When they did, they would grab on for only a second, but they would slip and the people would slow down. But ice is like people walking, and walking people can catch pinkies okay. That example explained hydrogen bonds waay more than any other teacher I’ve had..

I’m in highschool and in biology. We have a bunch of different fish, lizards, and snakes in our classroom. And the walls are filled with posters, deer heads, deer antlers, an old hornet hive, and tons of other stuff. Just make your classroom fun, set up a fun way to earn money with your students or have people donate stuff for the classroom. Make your classroom look alive. It is biology, the study of LIFE.
