high school is such a confusing time?

ok this is really kinda a weird thing to ask a bunch of strangers but i dont care, i’m a junior in high school and i’m trying to decide what to do with my life, the only problem is my options are limited, my situation is my parents will pay for any college i want to if it is close to home (I live in southern illinois) but i got scholarship to a music college in boston, which they won’t pay for, so my choices are after high school go and be a musician without music college, go to music college somehow raise the funds, be a coast guard rescue swimmer, or give in and go to college n this hell hole. please honest answers its driving me crazy (i really really really dont want to have to stay here)

Well if you’re going to be a musician or a music teacher and you got a scholarship to THAT college- I think you should explain to your parents how very prestigious it is. Don’t tell them they’re being unfair, or don’t know anything- just explain to them that this choice will open doors for you that the schools where you are could not hope to do. If Boston will take you and give you a scholarship- go for it, if you can raise the funds. They’ve changed the way the financial aid systems work, so if your parents are not helping you at all, you can now explain that, and leave their finances unaccounted for. It’s complicated, but it can be done.

Find out exactly how in debt you’d be after attending this school- and if you could not reasonably make back the money in ten years time- don’t go there. Mind you there are so very many scholarships out there that it is worth it to find out about and obtain as many as you possibly can.

That said, however, visit as many schools in the acceptable range as you can and see if they MIGHT be all right, after all, if you find you just can’t afford your first choice. My trick when I was college hunting (I’m an artist) was i looked at the work of the seniors (in your case, you’d listen, of course) and if I was already better than the majority of their students in my field, I scratched that school off my list. Find out also how much they’ll help you job hunt. It’s worth it to know you won’t be set adrift when you graduate.

It’s your decision what you want to do with your life. However, your parents may want you close because they are afraid of all the things that are out there in the world. If you really want to go to that college in Boston, then my advice would be to see what financial assistance you can get in addition to the scholarship. Also you’re a junior in high school, you can get an after – school job and start saving your money for the expenses you will incur as a student. In a year you might change your mind but saving money is always a good idea.

I think this is where you sit down and have a long, mature chat with your parents. What it comes down to is that they’re holding you hostage to do what they want to do with money. You can take the money and do what they wish – it is their money after all – or you can make it on your own and go to school wherever you wish. Do you know WHY they want you to stay locally? Do they have an issue with you becoming a musician? DO they just want to keep an eye on you? If you could manage it, ask if you could have the money they’d pay for a local school and you’d make up the difference in Boston. Hopefully the scholarship would make up a chunk of that.

Regardless, you’ll be an adult. Adults figure out how to pay for things they want, with or without mom and dad. It’s time to live your life how you want to do it.

Hey, I’m from Southern Illinois, too! Don’t go to SIU-C, its not a great school if you go to to an SIU, go to Edwardsville. My advice is look into Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois. It is a Christian College, but it has a wonderful musical program. My sister goes there and studies music. It is a great school. I dont know where you are in Southern Illinois but Greenville is about an hour northeast of Mt. Vernon, if you know where that is. Here’s Greenville’s website.
