High School Diploma still important even when you have College Degree?

If you dropped out of high school, but still got a college degree through Mature Student status (in Canada), do you think an employer would care that you did not recieve a high school diploma?

1) My wife didn’t graduate from HS and now has two bachelor’s degrees (both over 3.0) and has begun her master’s. A high school diploma is not required to get into college – but, an alternative (AHS, GED, etc) may be required. She didn’t start at the community college or part time, she started full time at the senior (4-year) college. It can and is done all the time. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done – it’s really not that difficult to accomplish if you want to.

2) Once you have a college degree, the value of the pre-college education is diminished to nothing. This is also often true of the value of an associates once you have a bachelor’s (unless they are in different fields). A BA/BSc retains some value once you have a master’s.

I don’t even put HS on my resume; any more than I’d list the Jr. High or Elementary school that I attended. It’s just not important after you graduate from college.

typically the high school degree is a pre-requisite to the college degrees. The only exceptions i can think of are “trades” like plumbing and capentry. In these cases, i’m not sure if the employer will care because he’s paying you for your skills and creativity.

I would check with the ontario labour relations board or set up a meeting with a career advisor at your college.

Not sure about that. I didn’t go to high school so I have no diploma. I think they don’t care about that because want they want is the knowledge we had gained in college as a professional. The employers usually check our grades while we were still in college trying to asses if we would work harder based on our grades.

Normally no. If it’s the government, and they have some specific requirement of a high school diploma for a particular job, then it might cause more red tape, or even eliminate you from contention.

I doubt it. The college degree trumps the HS diploma quite a bit.
