Just Me

Has anybody else gotten (or know of someone who has) into college on a GED?

If so, was it harder than you thought? Did you feel prepared? We’re there selected courses you could take? Tell me your/story!

My daughter quit high school in her senior year to get married. She had a child two years later. When he was four she took and passed her GED. She became a respiratory therapist in a hospital and worked there for four years. But still she regretted never going to college. She applied to U of IL in Champagne/Urbana. She worked and studied hard. She felt some of the younger students did not take advantage of the help the University offered. For instance in Geology, the teacher took an empty room and labeled rocks, the different kinds, how they were made, where they came from, he did this two weeks before the big test. You could go to the room any time, take your time and look at all the rocks that were in the room and Study them. Then for the test, the teacher removed the sign on the rocks telling what they were etc. So the students that had taken the time to study the test rocks, got the answers, the ones who had not bothered to look at the test rocks failed. Yet the ones who failed, raised a big fuss, about how unfair the test was.

Was it hard. She thought it was very hard. But each night she did her studying on the various subjects, and prepared for the next day. She got a B in Meterology, but said he was the most boring teacher she had ever incountered. Yet in College and the University, you have to be prepared for this, the teachers will come right out and tell you that this is not like high school and they really do not care if you study or fail, it is up to you.

Were there selected courses you could take. Yes, all regulated to what your major and minors were.

Now, was it worth while? Yes, she graduated Summa in 1992, and has a position in New York, with 9 staff members under her. And of course her income has almost doubled, with good insurance and all kinds of perks and vacation days. Another good thing is the work is interesting, the people she works with are too.

I think what you have to do is ask yourself, “Where will I be in four years, if I decide to go to school”? Amd where will I be in four years, if I decide NOT to go to school. I hope you decide on school.

Yes, I knew a guy that had a GED in college. He was a smart guy with a double major in Physics and Chemistry. It is too bad that he couldn’t find a way to finish since he was only a couple classes away.

If you are less prepared, most if not all universities have remedial courses to bring you up to speed. You need not go to a community college if you are accepted in a 4-year institution.

Yes I have a sister that quit school in11th grade, got her GED at 40, went to college and is now an editor and reporter for a newspaper in NY

My youngest brother was 16 and still in school when my parents divorced, it hit him so hard he dropped out, spent years washing dishes and working as a printer until in his mid 30’s he got his GED, went to college and he is now working for a large company teaching computer programs, he’s making great money and they both love what they do now!!

They both got the book and studied before they took their GED, my brother even found a study group, both said it was hard, but not as hard as they had been told it was.

Usually if you get a GED, you can go to community college for 2 years then transfer out to a different/bigger college… and yes, by then you will most definately be prepared.

i imagine the perfect answer on your topics is to get those 15 college credit hours at your community community college and knock the AFQT score out of the ballpark. The 15 credit will instruct you’re dedicated and as Mrsjvb reported its in worry-free words a semester or about 4 months. only take a english, math and some different effortless filler instructions. The intense AFQT score will instruct that you’re sensible sufficient, which might want to be improved by utilizing your semester in college. also, the intense AFQT score delivers you with extra and larger interest opportunities (evaluate the AFQT score to be extra major than the line ratings).

Ive seen people get into community colleges or 2 year colleges with GEDs… new environment, but community colleges can be compared to high schools, so its like getting your GED all over again
