For those who has taken (or taking) online classes to obtain a degree?
Favorite Answer
In addition to the reputation of the school, keep in mind that online courses from a quality program are generally much harder than courses taken in the classroom. An online course will require that you read the entirety of the text and that you write papers for assessment. There won’t be a lot of multiple guess exams. Also, if you have comprehension troubles, it can be more difficult to get individualized attention in an online class. Classes on campus in an evening program is usually an easier route if you have the available time. At many (if not most) schools, you can combine courses online and in the classroom.
Costs range from very affordable (your local state university) to incredibly expensive (some of the premier elite colleges) and everything in between. Very often, high cost does not indicate high quality.
Quality of programs is variable too. Academic research shows clearly that online students very often learn more than their in-class counterparts. But this depends entirely upon the school offering the class. There are good schools and bad schools.
You are not restricted to the likes of UoP, St Leo, DeVry, AIU for online study. Very many colleges have programs online now and you should examine all of your options starting with your local state university. UMass, Florida State, U Maryland, for example all have online degrees.
One of my favorite resources for programs is the list at Petersons.com http://www.petersons.com (click on “online programs”) and search there. You will be very surprised at which schools have degrees online.
