Finding a Mentor?

I’m a student at a small east Texas university studying mathematics. I also work at Chili’s as an expo (arbitrary). I am wondering why more professors don’t become mentors of students?

I’m wanting a mentor to help me continue my obsession with mathematics. I continuously look up new combinatorics and discrete structures. I like to review over things I might have missed.

I just kind of wish that some professors would give a chance to become rather close in the professional studies of students.

I would love to work alongside a professor in research, voluntarily. The experience is what I’m after.

What happened to the mentoring status of our professors?

Sneak Rufies in one of their drinks then lock them in your basement.

I agree with Kathleen. Based on my own experience as a classroom teacher for 21 years, I experienced the changes that the system imposed. It is unfortunate, as I think it is also a sign of problems in our society when acts of kindness are sometimes misconstrued. I knew that when I stayed after to help a student, I had to make sure my doors were open and that we were sitting where we would be visible to anyone passing by.

So, approaching a professor you respect or feel a connection with might be a start. Ask if there are unpaid internships of any type. Most teachers truly appreciate finding students who really want to learn and ask questions!

What happened was in the increasing incidences of inappropriate behavior.

I suggest you post your desire for a mentor in your school news paper or on the boards located thought the school’s halls.

Good luck.
