Everyone says…?

I’ve been told loads of times that colleges love to see the things you’re passionate about through your extra curriculars/volunteer work/classes when you apply. But, what happens if you’re not passionate about a specific things?

I like doing all sorts of things, but I’m not, like, SUPER passionate about them. I’m not sporty, artsy, technically inclined, or a very good writer. The only thing I could be considered ‘passionate’ about would be reading. I love love love to read, but there’s really no way to show that.

Any advice on how I can either become passionate about something that I can give evidence of, or how I can give evidence of my passion for reading on college applications?

You bring up an excellent point. Some people are passionate about a subject, but they get overshadowed by others who volunteer for all sorts of activities related to the subject. Others can’t do these extra curricular activities simply because they don’t have time for it (usually because of work). In either case it doesn’t make you any less passionate about the matter, it’s just that circumstances made things the way they are.

For your reading, the best way to show tangible proof on the matter would be join a book club, or join something where you can chronicle your current readings and give reviews to them. I’m sure that there are also places out there where you can share you opinions about what you’re currently reading to others. Those should count (at least in some sense) as extra curricular activities for your passion. Good luck with your schooling, and great inquiry btw.

Colleges love to see that students are well rounded in that they are able to do well in their studies while being able to be active in clubs and things to that nature. When it comes to ‘showing’ that you’re passionate about something, you can show this by maybe writing about it in your college essay- They just mean: is there anything else that you did during your highschool days besides go to school and go home? Showing you have extra curricular activities show that you are able to get involved, be able to reach out to others, and all the while, your grades are still high.

Hope it was clear. Good luck

Just exaggerate it, say you started a book club with people from your neighbourhood and inspired reading in other people and that gave you a feeling of reward and self pride. Say that one of the younger member wants to grow up to be an author and, despite her dyslexia, wants to be like *insert author’s name*

Simple, really. They would never check if you have a bookclub and IF they did, they’d never be able to disprove anything. LOL!
