Does “Mensa” look good on a resume?

Do you thinking being a member of Mensa would help me get into graduate school, or help me get a good job?

If you are looking at grad school, yes its a good idea as long as your GRE, GMAT and undergrad grades don’t contradict the Mensa perception.

If you decide to apply for a job, here’s a simple rule: 1. If its in a technical field where intellect counts, put it on your resume. Highly intelligent people are always needed. 2. If its a position in business, other than economics, leave it off. Why? Most people in the business end are highly political and very insecure about their positions and careers. They seldom hire people smarter than themselves.

If you really are a member of Mensa it should definitely help to get into graduate school because your grade point average would be high. It might help you to get a good job if you are knowledgeable in the field.

No. Pretty much everyone applying to graduate school is very smart. MENSA is basically an organization that will give you a certificate saying ‘you’re smart’ if you give them $100. Does that sound smart to you? I don’t know any professors or graduate students who are members of MENSA. Not because they wouldn’t be able to get in – far from it. It’s just that the PhD or other degree means a lot more than passing a logic test. And most of them consider that kind of thing to be pretty shallow. Basically, I think it would probably not reflect well.

If you don’t already know the answer to this, you won’t get in to Mensa.
