I want to go back and get a second degree… go for it?

I want to get a job working Public Relations, with my eventual goal of working for a political party, but I’m only a couple of semesters from graduating with a degree in Communication. Should I work for a few years and go back for a BA in Political Science or try to get into the Graduate Program in Political Science?

OK, here’s a thought, if you want to work for a political party, it seems communications applied to PR is ideal. What’s the point of going for another degree in political science?

Do some homework. Think about what you want to do in a political party. Get a job description for the position you want and look at the qualifications. Or, take your Communications degree and find an existing job in a political organization that best matches your degree. Then go get that job and start working for the party.

Meet and network with the folks…chances are, most don’t have a political science degree….but if they do, then you were right, going back to school to major in political science might be the thing to do. My bet is most of the folks in the party organization don’t have poli sci degrees. Most folks with a college diploma and NOT working in the field of their major.

Another test of this hypothesis….get a number of job descriptions for a broad sampling of the jobs in a political organization and see how many require a degree in poli sci.

I figure if you want to work for a political party….complete the communications degree and go get a job in a political party.

Once you are working, you can always come back to school and take classes that are more relevant to your work and your success in the party.

Hope this helps. best wishes.

Finish your degree and go to work for a political campaign. Study such political science as you care to on your own; political parties don’t worry about academic credentials much.

If you cannot find a job in a political organization, begin like almost everyone else does, which is by volunteering at someone’s campaign headquarters. This is a matter of learning political science from the street up, and also of paying your dues, so to speak.

My suggestions is for you to go out and get an employment, gain some experience and then pursue further studies into the Graduate Programmer in Political Science.

If you go to work, and continue your education part-time, the employer may pay for it. Go on to get a Masters after you have the BA. Means more. Eventually you are going to teach this stuff. Lobbyists are generally BAs working on a Masters.

Why not finish the degree you are working on now, and let your future employer pay for your next degree. A lot of companies (at least in my field) offer financial assistance for employees desiring further education / degrees. It worked for me!
