U of L’s Belknap Campus on S. 3rd St. is just south of the largest Victorian neighborhood in the US (Old Louisville) and adjacent to The Speed Art Museum. The campus is in the inner-city, but is relatively safe. The University moved to this campus in 1923, was able to use some existing buildings, and built several more building modeled on the architectural style of the University of Virginia. The Administration Building (Grawemeyer Hall) has a statue of Auguste Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ in front of it. The University used to be administered by the city, but was merged into the state university system in 1970. The campus added several new buildings in the late 1970s and late 1990s. U of L is primarily a commuter school, getting a number of students who live at home and drive to class, but in recent years U of L had tried to get a larger number of students from outside the metro Louisville area and other states. If you are considering living on campus, you should try to get into a newer dorm or, if an older one, one that has recently been remodeled. If you do not plan on living on campus or withing walking distance in an Old Louisville apartment, parking can sometimes be a problem (even with a University permit).
There is also the Health Sciences Campus in the downtown Medical Center area, and the Shelby Campus in Louisville’s eastern suburbs (although many classes at Shelby are also offered at Belknap). The Shelby Campus will soon be the home to a bio-terrorism research facility & the Health Sciences Campus is currently undergoing an expansion.
Belknap Campus also has some interesting animals living on it… albino squirrels.

It’s amazing! Go for a visit to see how the campus fits you; the campus is beautiful and the people are really cool! Plus there is so much to do in Louisville, even things not on campus, that you cannot find in other cities.
