Do you have to major or minor in the field that you want to get a master in?

Neither, although majoring or minoring in that field will definitely help.

One professor at U.Va. (where I go to school) got a B.A. in Asian Studies from UC-Berkeley and decided after a few years to take undergraduate, non-degree courses in Computer Science. Then she got accepted into the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in that field, and now she’s teaching here.

If you want to obtain a Master’s Degree in a field in which you did not major in as an undergraduate, you may need to take the preparatory undergraduate courses as a non-degree student.

You don’t always have to, but it helps. Do some research into masters’ programs in the subjects you’re interested in and see if there are any prerequisites you’ll be expected to have taken.
