Do I need a BA in Education in order to get a Masters in Education?

I have a BA in Art, I would like to be a teacher. I want to see if I can go back to school and get my Masters, but wondering if I need to already have a teaching degree in order to get a Masters in Education or a teaching certificate.

I am a teacher and no you do not need to be an education major to receive a masters in education. If you want to teach you should check out alternative certification programs in your area. Just type in alternative certification programs in google with your city and see what comes up. I was an English History major and went through one of those programs and have been teaching for 4 years. Also call your local school district and they will tell you exactly what you need to do to get a teaching certificate.

You can generally take a certification test and become alternatively certified, depending on which state you live in and their need for teachers. Contact your state department of education – teacher certification. I would recommend, however, that you go for your Masters in Education if you can afford the time and money. Generally, you don’t need a BA in Education in order to get into a Masters program. Jumping into the teaching profession without the proper coursework is like jumping into the deep end of the swimming pool without knowing how to swim. Also you can earn more money as a teacher if you have a Masters.

No you don’t! I’m going to speak with finality here, because I’m actually someone doing such a thing. I have a B.S. in Mathematics and a teaching certificate. I do not have the option of getting a Bachelor’s degree in education for the grade levels I want to teach. Art, typically, is a multi-age license area and you would normally get a degree in art education, BUT that doesn’t matter. Once you get your Bachelor’s in whatever, you’re welcome to apply to any school with a Master’s program in whatever you choose. Its up to that school to admit you or not and its up to that school as to whether you need to go back and get any undergrad education classes. Good luck pursuing your Master’s.

It depends on the program you enroll into. I had a Liberal Studies degree and later went on to earn a Masters in education with a teacher certificate. You can look at the private institutions in order to learn more about it. I went through University of Phoenix, and other friends went through National University,Azusa Pacific with almost identical results. I will actually go back in a couple of years and enroll in the Educational Leadership program and integrated administrative credential at Azusa Pacific. You can earn both in less than 2 years and with a ton of help. GOOD LUCK!!

no. some campus’ are doing the EPI program. Educators preparedness institute..this is where anyone with a bachelors degree, in anything mind you, can study for 2 years to get a teaching certificate and pursue a masters in education. Like one of the other answers said, “They are just giving them away these days.”

That is something you would have to take up with the school. My niece has a Masters in computers but a BA in education.

In most states you can get a fifth year masters in education. Call the head or director of the school of education where you wish to study ask for an appointment. He or she should be able to look at your undergraduate transcripts and advise you as to what your options are.
