What’s the difference between college book versions?

I’m contemplating on whether or not I should get the ’03 version of my textbook vs. ’06 version. Honestly, would it make a difference? If I buy the older one, it’s cheaper (duh). My dad says to not risk it and always go with the new version. What do you think?

If the professors teaching the courses that use that book felt it was in any way obsolete, they would REQUIRE the 06 edition, and the book-store would not have the 03 edition available. Professors review textbooks all the time. This ISN’T computer science, programming, or anything IT-related, so the facts won’t become obsolete nearly as fast. Get the less-expensive book.

Ask the professor. I teach several courses where we use two, even three versions of a text. There were revisions made each year. A 03 version vs. 06 may have too many changes. Best to ask, then buy.

Textbooks are revised all the time.

I think just to make more money making your old books unsellable and making you pay extra for a new one.

The main problem in using older versions of science and math textbooks it that homework assignments usually mention a page mumber and excercises you have to complete.

But if the book is just for supplement and it is primarily a lecture course, its possible to get by with the old one.

But when you’re paying thousands for Tuition why risk it?

Go with the current version unless the Prof. says there is no difference. Or see if your roommate has the same course also and spit the cost of a book if you have different sections of the class. If you live at home, you pretty much have to but the book. Try half.com, I bought a few there fairly cheap, but you will have to wait for it to be shipped.

good luck

There usually minor adjustments made with each edition. However, the pages will most certainly be different if you buy an earlier edition. It really depends on the class if the risk is worth it. Science classes, I wouldn’t risk it. I wouldn’t risk it with major classes either. You could check with the instructor. That’s your best and safest bet.
