Do colleges check the backgrounds of the parents of a prospective student?
Just curious if colleges look at the student’s parents backgrounds… such as financial, criminal, etc.
Please, this is a serious issue for me and I would only appreciate serious and knowledgeable answers. Thanks! 🙂

their finances will be looked at when you fill out the FAFSA to apply for federal financial aid, but that’s it. your parents’ background has no bearing on whether you get into college or not (unless, of course, they’re an alum of the school, which always bodes well on your behalf).

Only finances. If your parents are incarcerated and you are not able to get financial help from them you may be able to fill out the FAFSA as an independent student. Talk to the financial aid officer about the issue, but your parents’ background will not bar you from a college education- absolutely not.

The only time a parnets back ground is looked into is the fincial aid is determined by their last years taxes. However if this is going to cause some problems for you, Go into the finical aid office and discuss with them having the application only cover you in most cases they will have another form that will allow you to apply as an indepedent of course this will change your taxes and require proof of employment. Their finances will be looked at if you are applying for financial aid.
Otherwise — colleges don’t look into their backgrounds. That doesn’t mean that they don’t consider their backgrounds. For example, if they went to that college or are donors, it could help you. If they are well known, it could hurt or help.

If you are filing for financial aid as their dependent they will. Otherwise, not at all. Schools care about what you have to offer them, not who/what your parents are.
