Make a couple of realizations about summer school.

1. Your school may not accept courses from other schools – make sure they recognize the school in question.

2. Your school may not accept courses from other schools in your major – thus retaking the same course at your school.

3. If you take summer courses at another school, the grade will not transfer over into your main school transcript.

4. It is considered very bad not to take core circulumm classes at a school other than your main school – if you’re a biology major – taking BIO 101 at a school other than your own is a no-no. A biology major taking music is considered okay.

5. To show the grade to other institutions or your first job, you may have to produce (acquire from the bursar) from the other schools which isn’t easy at all.

6. Summer school courses can be very expensive – look to pay about a grand for a course – some scholarships or grants may not cover the expenses at all.

7. Do not expect all of the utilities of the university to be open during the summer – things such as libraries or computer labs may be on a limited schedule which may be difficult to correspond with.

Summer school sounds great, but there can be limitations to taking them. If you go to a state school, your state school may have satellite branches which may have equivalent courses which directly add to your main transcript.

However, as you stay in college longer the less likely you will be able to take many summer courses because they tend to be general education courses or lower tiered courses in specific topics. When you’ve been in college for awhile you will eventually take courses only specific to your major, and quite often those courses are only available during the regular school year.
