Could I major in computer science even if I’m not that good at math?

I’m guessing probably not, but I am good at + – x / and % and geometry, but have some problems in algebra especially when you into conics, graphs and fractions.

Also, is the math that is taught in college different from the one taught in high school? I think one of the reasons I’m bad at math is because of how the teachers taught it, which never got through to me. I really enjoyed Algebra I but once I got into Algebra II honors, my grade went down the drain and I got a D- in the class. But if math is taught differently in college, then I wonder if I might have a chance at finally grasping and understanding it, especially when I get into higher classes like Calculus…which scare me.

College math is more intense. Most schools offer Intermediate Algebra, which is just high school algebra, so that students can review their algebra, so they can go on to College Algebra, which is a requirement for any degree.

So, Intermediate Algebra is like your Algebra I and II in one semester.

As for the computer sci. degree you need to know some form of linear algebra, which is focused on matrix and vector algebra and their applications.

That will require some calculus. Serious, computer sci. programs would required a standard linear algebra course, which would be intro. calculus and differential equations.

The answer is no, you will do miserably in comp sci if you have a poor math foundation. Also, of course the math is “different”, the same way Alegebra is different from Trigonometry. The college courses will assume that you have a solid foundation. You may need to take remedial courses in Alegebra and Trigonometry if you are going to attempt the Calculus. But here’s the even better news, the major you are contemplating is a bad one. Hundreds of thousands of computer jobs have been offshored to India, China, the Philippines and Ireland. Unless you are willing to do desktop support, where your physical presence is required, you will have a hard time finding a job and an even harder time keeping it as companies are dumping more and more of these jobs to foreign countries all the time. Imagine spending $200,000 to go to college and coming away with no job and few prospects. Remember, with all the computer pros who have been laid off as a result of the offshoring, you are going to be competing against people with a whole lot more experience than you will have when you come out of school. Go into nursing instead or some other kind of job where your physical presence is essential.

Computer science is more on logic.. how you would program the computer to act in a sequence of events accordingly. If you were good in “flow charts” in school, you’d be good in this. Math is only secondary to computer science.

You can become whatever major you want in college… but will you pass your major b/c of math that a whole new question…. you can in allot of colleges design your own major… it fits in the things you like

Yes you can major in it and you will do just fine.

Any shortcomings you have with Math, the school will bring you up to date in.

if you’re interested in it, try it. but one warning is that it is A LOT A LOT of math, no doubt. mostly all of your classes will deal with mathematical equations and if you can keep up with it, i say go for it. but if not, you can always change your major

most likely not but it is still very possible.
