What is a research student?

What does one do as a research student?

(sorry if my question seems dumb, I’m really not familiar with the term)

In some programs (especially outside the USA) the entire graduate degree is based on the research of the student (thesis or dissertation) and not upon taking a certain number of classes. These are called “research degrees” as opposed to the more common (in the USA) “taught degree”.

All graduate students do research, some do more than others. The difference is that in a research degree, the research is the whole basis of the degree.

The University of South Africa is an example of a university with a strong research degree tradition.

students in graduate school studying for their master ande definitely PhD required to do research as part of the requirement for the degree. PhD students have to submit a thesis for a committee to reveal and pass to get their PhD. They are the research students
