Community College or Universities ???????

I’m an international student. This is my second year in US, and I’m studying in 12th grade in high school. Now, I’m preparing for SAT I & II, TOEFL which I’ll take in October and November.

Some of my friends who are studying in community colleges advised me to go to community college first, then transfer to UC. However, I prefer UCs ’cause they give higher degrees than community college. Though, my friend said that 2 years in CC may help improve my English, and honestly, I don’t know if I can get more than 2100 on SAT, and 80 on TOEFL ’cause you know, they are kind of hard for international students like me !!

Please give me some advice.

P.S. : by the way, can you tell me if I’m accepted to community colleges, what should I do to transfer to UCs and then, how many years I need to study in UCs if I want to be a doctor.

My favorite UCs are UC berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UCR

well CC are good for many reasons.

They are cheaper

Closer to home

you will have a greater chance of having a higher GPA

Small classes

I think that going to community college is a good idea. 2100 is actually very very very good in SAT.

CC have to take every one in so if you apply you are guaranteed in.

Most students go to CC for 2 years and get there AA ( Associate) then transfer to a 4 year university in your case UC.

For a medical Doctor you would have to do

2 years in CC

2 years in a university

4 years at a graduate school

3 years residency

then fellow ships for any extra thing you want to specialize in.

if you don’t go to CC then you just go to university for 4 years instead of 2.

Good luck

IDk how your grades are, but you may have a very hard time getting into those schools (except may UCR) with any grades, the UC’s are very competitive. If you really want to be a doctor and dont get into a good UC, you should go to a community college and then transfer to a UC. the degree will still be from the UC, not the CC. I am editing in response to another of your poster I have read. BEWARE of going to the cal state system if you want to be a doctor, they are not as well respected as the UC’s by far. You would be much much better off going to the CC and then transfer into the UC. the med schools will be much much more inclined to look at you if you are from a UC, regardless of whether you went to community college first.

Um, since you want to be a doctor, you MUST NOT attend community college. Medical Schools view community college courses negatively when it comes to the sciences and the other prerequisite courses for medical school (they just aren’t considered hard enough), and you would for sure have to take some of your pre-med prerequisites in the community college if you started out there.

So try to apply straight to California Universities. You may or may not get into the University of California system (especially if you have a 2100 SAT score–2100s are hard to come by even for native English speakers), but if not, you should be able to get into the California State University System. I think the medical schools would view CSU schools better in terms of med school pre-reqs than they would a community college. And I think you can still transfer to the UCs, or elsewhere, from the CSUs.

But if you have good grades and a 2100 on the SATS, I bet you could get into some UC.

honestly, i recommend you go to university, no matter which university do you attend into. there have three reasons:

1.community college is much lower education level than university

2.if you study 2 years at cc, then you’re going to transfer to university– that’s so hard to international student. the acception rate is down to 10%. what’s that meaning, you’d better to know it!

3.you can get more and more opportunities when you’re studying at university, particularly, the big college!

by the way, you can try to apply colleges at other states. let’s tell you, not only ca’s colleges are good but also the national wide’s colleges are so nice.

last word, i’m international student too. i hope my experience can help you a little bit.(because a lot of my friends did same job, they’re so regretted what smart business they did)

good luck to you, buddy!

I did a lot of floating around after i graduated, made a lot of mistake. Even if you think you have everything figured out for after graduation, i believe community colleges are a really good idea. Community colleges are a completely different atmosphere than Universities, but they are a great place to start and get a feel for the college life. Also, they are great to really figure out what you want to do and if you like what you are thinking about going into. Lastly, they will end up saving you a lot of money and in the end you’ll have a degree from a big university.

I would head straight for UC unless you don’t feel prepared for college life. If you can get above 2000 on your SAT, that is a good score. Don’t forget that your grades are the most important.

community faculties do nonetheless have some standards which distinctive from college to varsity. you nonetheless could stick to if taking training for credit, yet in many situations conversing all applicants are admitted. Universities have stricter standards and could contain front essays into the technique of utilising. it is applicable to have a school in techniques, and then browse the information superhighway internet site with the intention to get a experience for what they in specific ask.
