College Help!!!!! Ten points for best answer!!!!!?

I’m in the eleventh grade and have to start thinking of my future in colege-what I want to do.

Here are the options…

Neurosurgeon

General Practice Doctor

Cardiologist

Medical Officer

Those are my current main choices.

So which classes should I take to fulfill those choices?

And is there any such thing as a doctor who is the complete package…specializes in all or many parts of the body (I know I definately want to be a surgeon)…if so what is that called? And is it possible?

While some people have a clearcut idea from the very beginning of which medical specialty they go into, most don’t completely make up their mind until they are in medical school and rotating through all the various services. You need to get through your bachelors degree and get into med school before you really narrow down your choices.

By the way, a biology major is not mandatory. Unless of course, you are an foreign student, in which case, I don’t know exactly what the requirements elsewhere. If you are in the U.S., you could essentially major in anything…although you’d be best off in some sort of science major. The one concern is to make sure you meet all the requirements for admittance to med school.

You can be a surgeon, but you will have no life at all whatsoever outside of your job. A general practice doctor is the one that specializes in the whole body. That would be your family doctor. You could be an emergency room doctor, they also specialize in the whole body and/or many different things. And you will need to have a Biology major, and it is many classes you will need to take. Alot of maths, biologies, micro and macro biology, anatomy…etc and you still have to do your residency

After college, you first go to Medical School. That is the time you will decide on a specialty area.

My neighbor’s son has recently finished his residency,

In High School – took all the higher level courses that were available. Of course, math and science are important. He was super involved in school, community and church activities. He worked in the summer.

In College – his degree area was history. He had two advisers- one in history, on was pre-med. There is a core list of classes everyone applying to medical must have. He had one “B” in college. He was also every involved on campus. Lived in the dorm, was on the governing body which led to opportunities campus wide. There was a club for pre-med students. He applied for and was chosen for the cadaver team. All students don’t to work on it, just a selected few. Everyone gets to look. Have to do well on the M-Cat. Those scores, how your application looks, college transcript, involvement, references and interview all are part of applying to med school. You must develop strong references – college professors, community people, etc.

GOOD LUCK!!!

ok so it seems that you are pretty set on your majior. thats a good thing! im a senior in high school and i still dont even know where i want to go. i think that you need to concentrate on math and sciences. im not sure if any doctor can do all those things. but you might have a few specialties but one main practice you excell at. i think that you should look into all these fields closing and see what you like and dislike about each one. then go from there. good luck!!!

Take lots of science classes in high school- chemistry, physics, etc. Also take a lot of math. You’ll need to prepare to take calculus and some more advanced math in college.

There’s no general medical major in college that will cover all of your interests. You should just start college as a pre-med student.
