Can undocumented workers (illegal immigrants) go to college in Massachusetts? If not in MA, in which states?

A friend asked me if he could go to college paying full tuition here in Massachusetts. I have no idea, so if anyone out there can help we’d appreciate. In case he can’t go to school here, are there any other states allowing illegal immigrants to attend college? He’s 29, he’s been living in the US paying taxes since 2001. He graduated from High School in another country.

I think his chances are poor. A lot of states have a policy that their public universities do not check the immigration status of students who were graduated from a high school in the United States (they assume they are citizens, even though they know that, nation-wide, perhaps 5-10% of them are not, and that in some high schools, perhaps a majority are not). With a foreign diploma, I think he would have a hard time, no matter what.

The good news is that if he’s admitted to a college, he can apply for a student visa. I think his history as an illegal immigrant over the age of 18 harms his chances of getting one, but I would recommend asking an immigration attorney about this.

Unfortunantely, many of the immigration laws are changing, by state. Many states are enacting laws which prohibit illegal residents. In Oklahoma, some municipalities are charged with reporting illegals.

I’m sorry your friend is in a bind, but I can’t think of another country I could live in, for six years, illegally.

US citizens have to make “passport runs”, to stay legal, when we work and live in other countries.

What’s the problem with requiring visitors to do the same, in the US?

They are illegal aliens. Calling them undocumented immigrants is like calling a drug pusher an unlicensed pharmacist.

I like how you say “he’s been living in the US paying taxes since 2001”. Oh, ok that makes it all better. He is a criminal and he should go back to his country and apply for a student visa. That would be the appropriate thing to do.
