Unfortunately, you cannot practice in a State other than which you are licensed. The only exception to this rule is if you are going to a State that is part of the Nurse Licensing Compact (https://www.ncsbn.org/158.htm) California is not one of these states, though.
If you want to practice in another State, you will need to be licensed by that State…which means that you may need to complete additional trainings before you are eligible for licensure

I know there are traveling nurses out there but I am not sure if you have to be an RN to do this.

Try looking at this page. I was a nurse in California and when I moved here to Nevada it was not hard to change over, but if you want to travel around just look at the different sites and find out what you have to do. Hope this helps.
