Can I change college graduation date?

I am supposed to be graduation this Dec. from college, after being out for a few years. I decided to go back, but am also working full time with a family. I am enrolled in 4 classes which is exactly what I need, but with work 8 hours a day and a family at home, and going to school 7-9:50 3 days a week, I am overwhelmed. I did register to graduate, but now am wanting to drop to part time and finish in May of 08. Can that be done? I need some advice.

The best thing you can do is check with the Records Department (they do the audit that tells you that you have enough credits to graduate or not graduate). Make sure that dropping a class or two won’t effect your graduation. Did you apply to graduate? If so, can you just move it a semester or will you have to reapply?

You also want to make sure that you graduate in a timely way – if you wait too long there is a chance that courses you took in the beginning could end up not counting.

If you drop classes you won’t get money back at this point, right? Before you drop them you might also want to make sure that they will be offered again in the spring of 2008.

Sounds like you really have a load on your plate, one more semester to take it a bit slower won’t hurt anything. AND you don’t want to end up failing a course or getting a “D” that could hurt your G.P.A.

Talk to your academic adviser. If you are going to change your petition to graduate date to the Spring, usually only your department can initiate the paperwork to request that with the Registrar’s Office.

Also, ask your adviser if it is still within the withdrawal period for your classes. If it is still within the withdrawal period, you will most likely need your instructor’s approval as well as your department’s approval to do so.

Make sure that your curriculum requirements will not change as a result of you withdrawing to part-time status. Also, what are the impacts if you are not a full-time student? If you are on Financial Aid, you will be required to contact the Financial Aid Office for their approval as well. Is your medical insurance contingent upon your full-time student status. These are some questions to think about before you withdraw.

Best wishes!

I work at a small midwestern university and our students can change their graduation date whenever they want. If one of my students were in this situation, he or she would drop the two classes and then notify the office that handles graduation that he/she wants to change the graduation date. Or, you could just drop the classes and the people who do the degree analysis will figure out that you didn’t finish your coursework and probably notify you. Good luck!
