Can anyone offer me advice for college?

I just started community college and I’m extremely overwhelmed with all of the work. In fact, I had to drop 3 classes. I feel like I wasn’t prepared in high school because I was put in special ed classes from the 6th grade up. The classes were really slow and laid back. I never really had homework, and now, I’m spending 4-5 hours just one one homework assignment- not to mention struggling to death with it. I feel like I was screwed in high school because I was never predisposed to this sort of work. I mean I’m working extremely hard now but it’s not getting anywhere because no matter how much effort I put into it, I always do poorly. I’m afraid I won’t make it through…the work load is just unbearable and it’s rare that I have any time to myself anymore. It’s depressing how much I’m struggling through it. My college doesn’t offer free tutoring either but I feel like a tutor wouldn’t be able to help me much either. Can someone give me advice or give me some comforting thoughts at least

your not alone — i graduated from college in 2004 after a two year program. My first year was stressful and very overwhelming….i felt as though high school didn’t prepare me whatsoever. While going through my first year i was always thinking about doing my 2nd year part time — to ease up with the work load..however it would have taken me an extra year…..

Basically i just stuck with it…i worked as hard as i could and did the best the i could do for myself – wasn’t out to please anybody else…just take a step back and prioritize your assignments and workload….definietly look into getting some support — maybe a group of friends together during large assignment time…best of luck, trust me, it will get better 🙂

I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I went to a low class high school that offered poor education and in no way was I prepared for college when I went. When I got to the state university, I wanted to cry and just leave because I felt super dumb amongst my peers, everyone seemed to be so comfortable and knowledgeable in class and poor little me was stuck in a hole, it sucked. I struggled throughout the whole 4 years very badly and with little to no help so let me lend a hand. First, what are you going to school for? Sometimes, I have noticed now that I work at a technical school, a traditional school environment might not be the right environment for certain careers and maybe a technical school would better serve your needs and then you would not be feeling so overwhelmed. On the other hand, if you are majoring in something like medicine or law, you are looking at not only a long college career but also a stressful one. College is hard, no doubt but sometimes we make it harder by not researching our options. I can totally say that a traditional college environment is not for everyone, including myself. I almost had a nervous breakdown a FEW times due to it… don’t let that happen to you.

if you aren’t holding down a job then take a maximum of 12 credits [4 classes]…it’s not like HS where you can handle 6 to 7 classes..it’s a whole different ballgame in college…

don’t have classes all on one day…take 2 on mon/wed and 2 on tues/thurs…if that is how your college does classes [mine does it that way]…make sure there are breaks between the classes you have on the same day so you can focus on studying and writing notes…have lunch and then lock yourself in the library for about an hour and 30 minutes…then get ready for the next class and chill…don’t overwhelm yourself…the first year always feels a bit foreign but you’ll get the hang of it…

You may want to see a counselor on campus and ask what resources are available to you. Perhaps 2 classes at a time is all you can handle… it will just take you longer to finish.
