B.A in Government or Criminal Justice/ Criminology?

Which major would offer more job possibilities? I really enjoy laws and psychology(hence criminology), however, being a cop or a detective is not something I can see myself doing for a long period of time(even though I do have a black belt in TKD, but that really doesn’t matter). I’ve heard that Criminal Justice degrees virtually get you “nowhere”, I plan on going into paralegal, law type situations and want to know what would be the best for me to pursue to get to know the laws, etc,(by the way these are both online from credible colleges.) Thanks!

Many attorneys offices will not accept paralegal educations from online schools unless they are Regionally Accredited (the same as the traditional colleges). However, if you are going into that field you may want to get a Paralegal degree. Or a degree in Crminal Justice with a minor in paralegal studies. The CJ degree will let to explore laws that you will come up against if you go into an office that does criminal defense, DUI representation, etc.

First off, I made the mistake of doing a “credible online college” and regretted it almost immediately (Walden University). Second, a paralegal will need more of a technical education and you’ll need more specialized classes after your BS. Third, criminal justice degrees are too generalized and will get you nowhere unless you get a master’s or a Ph.D. The same with Psychology (I have a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in criminal justice from a real university, and have never been able to get a job in my field).

Your best bet for a good job is to get a BS, not a BA. If you must have a BA (everyone has one so they don’t mean much), why not go for pre-law? That seems to be the field you are interested in. You are really limiting your job opportunities by wanting to go into a field like that. There is nothing that makes people stand out in those fields when trying to find a job.

By the way, TKD is a nonsense martial art. That is why you never see TKD in MMA fights. They can’t cut it.

B.A. in Government definatly. If you want to be a paralegal then an AAS for a paralegal is appropriate. You can also get a certificate to be a paralegal and then go onto your BA. A certificate will get your foot in the door, then you can move onto higher positons. And if you ever change your mind you can use the BA in Government for many diffent things.

You can do a lot. I’m thinking about going for my MA in CJ and the options I’ve found are good. You can go into research and analysis, casework specialist for the Dept of Corrections, parole agent, teach at a community college, just to name a few. Check out the International Crime Analysts Association and State jobs. Good luck!

Think law school….not police

plus if your idea of being a cop is being able to kick someones but we don’t need you as a cop.

Seriously you are supposed to protect a serve. Not to mention cops avoid hand to hand because they do carry a gun that can be taken away.

being a cop is boring and not what you think. it is about giving tickets and making money for the state/city/county.

it is not helping those that need it. We write reports about crimes that are over.
