Are my marks enough for Harvard, Princeton, or Stanford?

I am a Canadian student looking to attend an Ivy League school in the US, and I wanted to get some insight into my chances.

I currently reside in Canada, and from my knowledge of the education system, I understand that a Canadian student’s marks are equivalent to the same mark in the US, but for an IB student. Eg. a Canadian 85 = a US 3.7 of a student in the IB program.

My current marks are consistently in the 85-90 range (3.7-4.0 IB).

As for the SATs, I have yet to write them, but on practice tests out of 1500, I consistently score 1350-1400.

Are these marks good enough to gain me acceptance into an Ivy League school such as Stanford?

stanford is not an ivy league school. you probably wouldn’t get in because everyone that applies to these schools has perfect grades, #1 in his/her class, and almost perfect SATs. but if it’s where you want to go, you should apply…grades and SATs aren’t the only thing they look at. just apply to a few other schools that aren’t as competitive as the ivy league

Ivy league schools dont just look at GPA’s they look at personality comunity service extra curicular activities and many other things your marks are probably high enuff to qualify you but its the intangables that really determine if you get in or not if i were you i would check into those things before worrying about grades. and if your not accepted right off then go to another university for a year or two work on those “other things” and try to transfer there is no shame is starting somewhere else as long as you finish where you want to be

A 3.7 will get you a good chance of getting in if you’re well-rounded (i.e., good extracurriculars, some other extraordinary life experiences, etc.). Make sure you write a good essay, too. And get an alumni interview if you can.

Just a word of caution – I think the SATs are out of 2400 now (they used to be out of 1600 back when I applied to schools).

I hate to say it, but probably not.. BUT if you can make up for those by writing phenomenal entry essays and the other areas that schools look at, then you still have a chance. Definitely do an interview at at least one of them, those can help your chances.

The reason that those are probably not good enough to rely on is that a majority of the people who apply had 4.0’s and much closer to 1500 than that. Then a smaller portion of people basically get in because of donations. It IS of course possible to get into those schools with lower grades though! You just can’t rely on them that much.

your academic record needs to be perfect or nearly perfect. this also applies to your SAT scores. But often even outstanding grades arent enough: ivy league schools (btw, stanford is not an ivy league) also want you to excel in other aspects of life; that is, they want you to be involved in extracurricular activies such as school government, community serivce, etc… They want to see your potential to contribute in many aspects of your life. well, hope this helps. Good luck!

It takes more than grades. And you will be competing with students who GPA’s are equal–and higher. Hundreds or thousands them. You need to have a diverse background with a lot of involvement in other activies. Your admissions essay will be very important. Get good letters of recommendation from your teachers.

Cathrine is right. You’ll be in a huge pool of people with the same qualifications. Schools like this look for people who are self-starters and leaders, so people who have accomplished things on their own and taken initiative to do something they believe in. In other words something that sets you apart.

You would have to be a grade A * student and be supported by your school. Full scholarships are very difficult to obtain and do not cover living costs so you would have to work out how you can support yourself if you can meet the academic requirements.

I would think so. Congratulations on keeping those grades up, and best of luck to you on the SATs.

(Volunteer work and extracurricular activities help on your admissions as well)
