Cal doesn’t take many masters students, actually. MOst people who have am asters degree from Cal entered as PhD students, and dropped out after earning their masters. In general, Cal doesn’t offer many masters degree programs because they regard themselves as a research institution, meaning they are trying to generate academics and full-time researchers.

With that said, most of my friends at Berkeley were CS and EECS students. All of those who applied to grad school applied to Cal for grad school. I only know two people who were retained at Cal for PhD’s (not that the others did badly: they scattered to Cornell, CMU, UCSD, some school in Vancouver and Stanfurd).

So yes, it’s competitive. Good luck. Stay for the PhD. It’s cheaper.

It is very competitive but it can be done if you have reached the minimum requirements and have done well not just academically but your extracurriculars are good to.
