Applying to College?

I am applying to rutgers university, and am interested in majoring in accounting. However, there are many other prospective students interested in the business field, so I was wondering if I should put UNDECIDED under my INTENDED MAJORS column, rather than ACCOUNTING. I figured this would increase my acceptance chances. What do you guys think. ACCOUNTING, or UNDECIDED?

I would go ahead and put in accounting–your degree choice will not influence the decision as to whether or not you are accepted to Rutgers.

This is the process:

You apply to the university. They accept or deny your application.

Once accepted, you’ll enroll in classes. Your degree will seperate you into individual groups that make registration easier, especially at a larger university.

Each university has seperate schools, yours will probably be a business school. When you’re a sophomore or junior, you’ll apply to be acception into the Rutger’s business school, and from there you’ll go into accounting.

Honestly it’s not important to really decide on your major until you are at least a sophomore, mainly because you’ll be finishing your general education classes first.

I think it’s best to apply as early as possible- usually between Sept and Dec 1, but it’s okay to apply in the spring as well. If you apply after you graduate, you will lose an entire year of school. If you are going to do something like that, you might as well take a year or 2 of classes at a community college, and transfer.

Using accounting as a major won’t improve or lessen your chances of getting accepted. The only thing that may be affected by the number of people going for the same major are the classes. All you have to do is take what classes are available for your major and try to sign up early next semester for the classes you missed.

The major you put doesnt matter when applying. You should put Accounting so you will be allowed to start accounting courses as soon as possible. In fact, it’s probably better to have a major than to put ‘Undecided’. It looks better.

it depends on how competitive your transcript is…if you have good grades in competitive classes like honors, ap, and so on, as well as good letters of rec from professors and good extracurriculurs that revolve around this interes of yours, then put accounting for sure. if you are not competitive at all, put undecided. If you are somewhat competitive I would still put accounting since there will be a great deal of students applying for the same major as yours, but there will be a far greater number of students applying undecided. That is just my take on it…good luck.

On your application, when you say what your intended major is, it really is INTENDED, not permanent. You say that you want to go into accounting, then put accounting. If you think you know what you want to do, then say it. the college will know that you have some sort of idea what you want to do with your life and that your goal-oriented. You might change your major when you actually get there, and colleges understand that. They just want to know whether or not you have an idea of what you want to do in the future, and what it is.

depends on rutgers admission policy and popular fields. back when i was applying for colleges (specifically berkeley), my admission hope depended on the number students applying for that major (or undecided). so, if i declared political science as my major and 10,000 others students declared the same thing, my chances of getting accepted was very slim. but if i declared an odd major, like forestry, my chances are pretty good.

good luck.

hmmm tough choice. I see your logic in putting Undecided. If your grades are really good then they might want you no matter what your degree is – so then I would put undecided. Just a guess, I didn’t have to do that to enroll in my current college.

Undecided. I cannot tell you how many people change their major between freshman and junior years, but I can tell you that it is a lot!
