An Associate degree is a 2 year program of study where you take general education classes (Math, Science, English) in addition to professional courses that are related to a certain degree program.

A Certificate program usually only incorporates professional courses related to a specific career.

For example, an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding incorportates English, Math, Science, and other general education courses in addition to Welding courses.

Certificate of Proficiency programs only incorporate Welding courses.

As far as resume enhancement goes, it’s hard to say. If you are applying for a Welding job, and you have an Associate Degree in English…it wouldn’t really help your resume much.

An Assosiate’s degree is higher than a Certificate. Neither will go far in negotiating a better salary. Beyond an Associate’s degree, many employers require a Bachelor’s degree. Some even require a Master’s or professional degree beyond that. Get as much education as you can!

Well, an associates degree is an actual, real college degree (as long as it is from an accredited institution.)

I couldn’t even tell you what a certificate of proficiency is. And it probably means nothing to anyone except the person who gave it to you.
