another med school question?

I already asked something like this, but I have another question on this subject.

I am planning on going into medical school. I am a sophomore and JUST decided to do it… I’ve taken calculus, one semester of chemistry, and taking biology right now. I’m also almost done with all my other general requirements. I have like 2-3 classes to go.

Anyway, from my research, I found out that medical schools look not only at your GPA and MCAT scores, but also at your other activities… like, volunteering, being a leader in a science club, etc etc….

My question is: What if I need a lot of time to study and doing these things will lower my grade? I can only do these in the summer or so… Will it really keep me from getting into a med school?

I am a member of one club, but it’s not science related or anything.

This is college not high school. It is okay to be in one or two clubs. Some might be not to demanding, but if you in serious club or organization, then one is a enough… just make sure you are active in it, do projects, and can attain leadership roles.

Are you working? If so, then is academic related? Instead of working at retail or fast food. Try getting a student job like tutoring, lab work, hospital work, or research. Something that ties into your studies current.

I really think my 4 years as a tutor for my college and 1 year working at the college’s research reactor… helped my get finical aid as soon as I got into my masters program.

By all means, do some volunteering during your summer months. The type of volunteer work is important–the closer you are to actual delivery of health care the better.

It’s not the duration of your experience that the admissions committees look for–it’s a demonstration of interest and evidence that you’ve been exposed to the reality of medicine versus Hollywood hype.

You should be able to do extra circulars and keep your grades up at the same time. If it was easy, everyone would be able to go to med school.

You should be fine, so many students have done it before. You will have to sacrifice a boat load of personal time though. But if you want it bad enough, go for it! Just don’t do it for social status purposes.

Good luck!!!
