The rules of chivalry dictated that knights in the Middle Ages allow ladies to enter a room ahead of them, thereby displaying courtesy and respect. Thus, in order to get a chick, or be polite we still adhere to it

The “weaker sex” was always deemed to be in need of saving and protecting. If a lady walked ahead of her escort into a room or passageway, he would be in the physical position to best help her if she tripped, slipped, fainted or faltered. It is the same reason women grasp the elbow of their male escort. By bringing up the rear, men protected their women from vulnerability from behind. It also allowed the lady to make an impressionable entrance when at a social event.
The “ladies first” rule has always applied to perilous situations such as at-sea lifeboat evacuations (still in effect on some major cruise lines today!) where men are considered better able to fend for themselves. In polite society, women are served first at a dinner table, their food orders taken first etc. Interestingly, children are also served before the men so the more accurate phrase would be “men last”. Perhaps it has something to do with stature, as women tend to be shorter than men and would have their visibilty blocked if they walked behind a man.
