Brasilia was built to be Brazil’s new capital city. The idea was to transfer the federal capital of Brazil from the coast to midwestern / interior of the country. Brazil had had two capital cities before that: Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia. By transfering the capital city to the interior, the government intended to help to populate that area of the county.

Rio de Janerio.

Brasillia was built by the Brasilian government to populate the internal areas of Brazil and to shift pressure away from the south eastern coastal cities such as Rio and Sao Paulo. However Brasillia was a failure and only has around two million people living there, compared to Rio with 8.5million and Sao Paulo with 12 million
