What is the meaning of a dead match and where do it derive from?

I am an ex-smoker. Some smokers believe that when you light up a cigarette with one match for more than 2 people you cannot light up the third smoker with the same match. Hence the phrase a dead match, why? and what kind of bad luck does it actually bring if you did light up the third person with the same match?

From the war when soldiers were in foxholes. Lighting more than one cigarette with the match gave enemy a chance to get a good bead on where to shoot to hit someone in the darkness.
