LOVE is SHABONDAMA

Echo was an Oread (a mountain nymph) who loved her own voice. Zeus loved consorting with beautiful nymphs and visited them on Earth often. Eventually, Zeus’s wife, Hera, became suspicious, and came from Mt. Olympus in an attempt to catch Zeus with the nymphs.

The name “echo” comes from the Greek nymph Ηχώ from Greek mythology. According to Greek mythology Echo was a Nymph who had the job of talking incessantly to Hera, the Queen of the Gods, so that her husband, Zeus, wouldn’t get caught in his numerous affairs. Hera caught on to Echo’s trick and cursed her to only be able to say what others had just said — hence the word “echo”. Yet according to Roman mythology it was Pan, who when Echo denied his love, tore her to shreds and scattered her about the Earth leaving bits of her everywhere for us to find, or rather for us to hear, forever.

Great question!

Myths are based on tradition more than on facts, and have been passed down for thousands of years, often only orally, so there are variants of every myth from every culture. Among the Greeks, there are several different versions concerning the “history” of Echo, and Wikipedia does a good job outlining them. Check it out for a good read. Several of the earlier answers have touched upon one or the other of the versions.

Echo was a forest nymp who fell in love with a handsome man named Narcissus. She kept asking him to be her lover, but he kept refusing because he said he never knew why women were attracted to him. So Echo led him to a pond so he could see his reflection. Narcissus instantly fell in love with himself and didn’t want to be with anyone else. Echo felt despair and horror, and she just pined away in her forest until all that was left was her soft, shy voice. It’s her voice that echoes what we say, hence the name.
