The sabre is one of the three weapons of modern sport fencing, and is alternatively spelt saber in American English. The sabre differs from the other modern fencing swords, the épée and foil, in that it is possible to score with the edge of the blade. For the other two weapons, valid touches are only scored using the point of the blade. Like foil, sabre uses the convention of right-of-way to determine priority.
A sword is a bladed weapon, consisting in its most fundamental design of a blade and a handle. The blade is usually of some metal ground to at least one sharp edge and often has a pointed tip for thrusting. The handle, called the hilt, can be made of many materials, but the material most common is wood covered by leather, fish skin or metal wiring. The parts of a sword are remarkably consistent between cultures. The basic intent and physics of swordsmanship is fairly constant.

Apparently saber (or sabre) is a type of sword:
Saber: a heavy cavalry sword with a slightly curved blade.
Sword: A hand weapon with a long, sharp-pointed blade set in a hilt.

A saber is just a type of sword. A sword is just a general term for all long blade weapons. ie. all sabers are swords, but not all swords are sabers.

For costume purposes, the sabre is a more commanding presence because it is larger. In actual combat, a sabre is used for hacking and slashing, whereas a sword is more often used for more complex manuvers. Learning to use a sword competently is far more demanding. It is not necessarily a better means of combat. Anyway, here’s a hint: never bring a knife to a gunfight.
