How many states does the U.S.A. have?
Favorite Answer
We have several territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Marianas, the Virgin Islands and some others.
The District of Columbia is not a state, and is unrepresented in Congress.
All of these have at various times been proposed for statehood.
The commonwealths you mention are also states. We have at least two commonwealths (Puerto Rico and the Northern Marianas) that are not states.
Two states–Texas and California–are also republics. Texas has an option few people know much about to subdivide itself into as many as five states if it ever so wishes. Fortunately Texas is happy to be just one state.
That is exclusing Washington D.C., which is a federal district.
