What does the RA stand for on chiming clocks (Windchester)?

I have a new Windchester Chime Clock with the initials R.A. on the tickers. I’ve seen this before too. What does it stand for? Thanks.

Notice the arrow by those initials? It indicates which way you need to adjust the screw at the bottom of the pendulum in order to Retire or Advance it.

If the clock is running too fast, turn screw toward the R to slow down the rate of the pendulum swing; if it is running too slow, turn screw toward the A to speed up the rate of the pendulum swing.

Actually, “R A” stands for the French words “retarder” (delay) and “avancer” (forward). Note that the word is “avancer” (French) and not “advancer” (English).
