Five, with an AABBA pattern. I’ll give an example as soon as I can think of one clean enough for the censors.

Limerick Rhyme Scheme:

Limerick must have five lines with aabba rhyme scheme.

Rhythm:

The beat must be anapestic (weak, weak, strong) with three feet in lines 1, 2, and 5 and 2 feet in lines 3 and 4.

There was a young lady from Kent

Who said that she knew what it meant

When men asked her to dine,

Gave her cocktails and wine.

She knew what it meant but she went.

To all the men I’ve loved before Who came knocking at my door On bended knee You did your plea And now be gone forever more A second verse to settle the score To prevent me spilling all your gore False was your deed You planted your seed And now I find you rotten to the core A third verse cause there’s just some more You left my poor heart battered and sore I sought a flash in the pan And found only sand So now I’m putting you on IGNORE

Five lines.

First two lines have 9 syllables each and rhyme with each other.

Next two lines have 5 syllables each and rhyme with each other (but not with the first two lines.)

The last line again has nine syllables and rhymes with the first two lines.

It looks like this:

da da da da da da da da de

fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fe

ba ba ba ba by

ha ha ha ha hy

ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma me
