What are some english equivalents of the spanish idioms de tal palo, tal astilla (such wood, such splinter)

and mas sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo (the devil knows more because of his age rather than because he’s the devil)

The first might mean the same as “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, which means that children tend to be like their parents.
