How long do you usually wait to know if you’re accepted or denied, from the Ph.D programs you applied?

Admission to a PhD program is not like admissions to other programs where there is an admissions staff. The faculty of the department has a committee that makes the decisions. The departments don’t even sit down to look at the applications until all applications are in — which means that it happens after the deadline. Often, departments go through a recruiting period for new faculty in January and February — and then decide on PhD students after that.

When I applied to PhD programs in Finance (in the 1990s), I heard from the schools that accepted me in late February. I heard from most of the schools that rejected my by the end of March or early April. One school (Carnegie Mellon) never responded.

When I applied to PhD programs in Math (in the 1970s), I heard in February (all were acceptances).

The school will usually tell you when they notify applicants. However, as a general rule, if the submission deadline is in Dec/early Jan – you will know by March/early April for September admission.

also, be prepared to be wait-listed but remember that it is a great thing to be on a wait list as it means many people were pulling for you and you will probably get in 🙂

my fingers are crossed for you!!!

Depends on the school itself. They will usually contact you whether they accept you or not. If you’re not sure, you can call or email them and ask for an approximate date.
