Why do sometimes I feel discriminated against?

Im a black college student studying for my industrial engineering degree in Mississippi, however, sometimes I feel discriminated against by SOME whites because of the stereotype that is abounding in our society. I am speaking about the rap artists who constantly barrage our tv and music stations with lyrics about selling crack, smoking weed, robbing and killing “N#%$#@”, and slapping and beating hos!! It bothers me sometimes because at times I feel like white america is buying into that whole rap stereotype. I understand that some of the things that rappers say are actually what they had to go threw. But when you are on live T.V. the whole world takes it as your RACE. Does anyone understand? Sometimes when Im in other cities, primarily white cities, people tend to act, look, and walk a certain way when Im around. And I dont like that. Am I being paranoid? probably. But If anyone out there who knows what Im talking about will agree. How come whites think of us a such??

Dear fren for me there are no black, white etc. We all just human being and we living as a brother and sister in this world.. Why you think like that to others. First of all you yourself saying you are black and others are white. Why you discriminated yourself? I really don’t know about your citizen but if you are American, you must say ‘ I am an American ‘ not black anymore.. You are started that feeling not others.. You are just feel, it is not occured at all.. Don’t use your feeling to describe others.. Try to create feeling of love among us… its really help us to live together peacefully…

Wow, Earl D has some serious issues!! He does NOT however answer your question, which happens to be a very good one. I personally believe that the black image that is portrayed in the media is the cause of this discrimination. I know lots of black people ,who think like you ,who are disgusted with the media’s glorification of the X rated rapper, the thug football or basketball player, and even the popular comedians who CANNOT get through a routine without making fun of white people, or telling how funny it is that their friends are druggies and lowlifes. The black audiences howl with laughter and then wonder where the stereotypes come from. I think the answer must come from within. When rappers start rapping without the verbal garbage, when black atheletes AREN’T getting arrested for drugs, guns or dogfighting, when a black comedian can give a performance WITHOUT stereotyping his own race in a negative way………………………..maybe then, things will change.

I’m not American, I’m Asian and what you’re saying is probably true. The whites still have some issues. This is from what I hear and observe myself. I am also enduring racism everyday for being half-chinese and half-malay and I mean like EVERY SINGLE DAY. Whites and blacks are the issue in America but you have to understand that there are others just like you all around the world.

I also realise that Native Americans are also shockingly underrepresented and I really feel for you. But I have come to accept my terms and you should too. Just ignore them. What God made us, its the best for us. Imagine if you’re a white and you don’t know how blacks feel… you sniggering along with them.

OK, OK, what I’m trying to say is some people will never change, the society is just like THAT. Its what makes us stronger.

The way I look at things is like this.

People who choose to stereo type people, or cultures in this way are 1 narrow minded and 2 uneducated.

To label a whole race. or culture on the behavior of a few is ridiculous.

There are to many people in this world who think t5hat they way they view things is right.

Every culture has its good and bad points.

That how its always been and that’s how it will continue to be.

I always say to everyone who broaches this subject to stand tall and be proud of who you are.

I personal love the black race because the majority are very intelligent, intelligent in ways that go beyond education.

They understand emotions on a level a lot of white people can’t.

What I find sad is how black people are made to feel insecure and paranoid as you state.

F.u.c.k everyone who thinks hey are better then you.

For them to be thinking like that states they are not.

People who behave in this manner are ugly on the inside.

You are doing great things with your life, so keep on smiling and rise above these fools.

you probably are, i am a white and i cop it from different nationalities living in our country which is now a multi coltural nation. I am not racist i have met and realy liked a lot of different races though there will always be the trouble makers in every race even our own,there always has been. Soon you will be comfortable as you finish your studies and choose who your accociates are. sorry this happens and for the past years of discrimination you and your ancsestors endured.

I’m not sure how you are personally being victimized because you don’t provide any concrete examples. Instead you have gone on a rant & rave which is general & superficial. Perhaps you need to read a speech made to the NAACP by one of the most pre-eminent black people in America – Dr. Bill Cosby. It deals with how the black community is its own worst enemy by condoning violence in their youth culture (rap, clothing, slang…etc.) He also states that it’s time for the black community to get off the victimization bandwagon and take responsibility for itself instead of continuously whining about what “whitey” has done to them. Here’s a website which contains the whole speech in it’s entirety both the actual video version and the transcript. Please listen to it or read it carefully and think about it. Perhaps you need to not think of yourself as a victim and just get on with studying and becoming just a good human being, not defined by the colour of your skin.

It is a stereotype most people have unless they are black or have lot’s of black friends. You have to double your efforts to show your friendly and not like that, and it’s not fair but it’s like that. it’s like how a woman would probably have to be extra smart, political, ambitious etc. to get a very high position in men’s domain.
