There is a huge misconception that teaching jobs are easy to find…nothing can be further from the truth…

The fact is baby boomers are not retiring in the numbers originally expected and many people are switching careers and going into teaching…

For this reason there can be as many as 500-1000 applicants for one teaching position in certain areas of the country…Long Island is one of those areas.

There are three steps to getting any teaching job:

1. get the interview

2. ace the interview

3. the post-interview follow-up

To get a teaching job, you MUST stand out in all three steps in the process.

I strongly suggest reading all the articles on this page: http://www.TeacherInterviewTips.com/teacher_interview_articles.htm

Each article will give another way to stand out amongst the intense competition.

Good luck!

You may need to get some experience first. When I started looking for a teaching job in Massachusetts many years ago, there weren’t any wherever I looked. As a matter of fact, I was told 5,000 people applied for one job as a teacher’s aide (that’s how bad things were). I went to New Hampshire to get a few years’ experience feeling I could then return to Mass. As it turned out, I remained in NH ever since. Find something somewhere else, prove yourself, and then try again. (Long Island pays well, but it’s also pricey to live there.)

Hi! I agree, substitute teach (teaching/paraprofessional/clerical) — in all schools in Long Island. It lets you look at each school principals, staff, students. It lets them look at you, too! And, keep applying and interviewing in Long Island and school districts close by. Public, private, charter school, Sylvan Learning Centers, etc. — just stay busy and flexible. You’re going to get the teaching job you want! Wishing you the very best!

It’s quite possible that the school districts have already hired. It is nearing the start of the school year. Have you tried school’s websites looking for new openings? Edu-join? County of ed.? Good luck. Otherwise if you can afford to…substitute teach.

Maybe you don’t interview well. Practice interviewing with a friend.
