Is there proof, based on research, of harm or benefit of introducing foreign language to 1.5 year baby?

We are considering hiring a native English speaker as our nanny so that our 1.5 year old baby would learn English in addition to his native language.

We are mainly interested if there is any proof (based on reliable research) of benefits or harm of introducing new language at this age? We would appreciate names / links to such research.

I can’t remember names of studies, but I have heard that a child under the age of 5 is very likely to pick up an extra language very easily, and after that age they lose the innate abilitly, so it is a very good idea to introduce a second language to your baby now to allow him to be bilingual, as he will find it more difficult when he is older. It definitely does no harm.

I still remember German words my mother taught me when I was a baby. Young children pick up languages as children (when exposed to them) much easier than older (grown people) do. I cannot quote facts, names, and figures about this, but being an ex-school teacher I can say that it is well known that children pick up languages better than adults, or we wouldn’t grow up speaking the local language, now, would we? No harmful effects are known about this. Good luck.

i’m sorry i can not supply you a ‘link’ yet i will show you how to comprehend a tale from my very very own journey. i replaced right into a teach to college scholars. I had 2 who have been ‘bilingual’ from the time they found out to chat. the two certainly one of them had some distance worse issues remembering the ‘appropriate grammar and spelling’ of the two languages because of the fact of that ‘early immersion’ in 2 languages on the comparable time. I had different scholars who had found out first their close by language, and then found out a ‘2d language’ after the age of 13. It did not rely ‘which’ replaced into the 1st language found out, they have been plenty extra clever at ‘gaining knowledge of and conserving’ the right grammar and spelling of the two languages. i think of that it somewhat is ‘ridiculous’ to have any new child learn a ‘2d language’ beginning at a million.5 … somewhat because of the fact you (and pesumably your significant different) needless to say comprehend the thank you to apply English very nicely. in case you’re able to do it, so can your new child, at approximately the ‘comparable age’ you found out to chat English.

BENEFIT!!!! I don’t know of any official research, never needed any. My husband is from Rome, Italy and we taugh our son Italian along with english since he was a baby. Little ones are like sponges and will soak up everything. Definetly start the teaching NOW. Your child will be that much father ahead of his counter-parts when he gets older because it will be part of his nature.
