what would you do as far as college if you wanted to become a high school teacher?

Major in a subject field, and take 1/2 the classes and graduate with your BA earlier then go get certified, or take twice as many classes, and stay in school longer to get your education degree?

I am thinking the 1st, but want your opinion on this

Many schools of education require that you take education and area related courses. I have a degree in education, a master’s in education, and I’m working on my doctorate in education. I work with people who have both a BA/BS in whatever subject they are teaching and an education degree, and I work with people who have chosen alternative means of certification. I can say that at the beginning many teachers who get alternative certification are overwhelmed by the whole process of preparing a class, managing a class, and handling all the paperwork that comes with being a teacher. It is usually when these teachers burn out and decide to do something else.

If you _know_ you want to be a teacher for the long haul, I would suggest going the education program route; however, if you’re unsure or if you believe teaching is going to be a stop-gap measure after college then I would suggest getting a BA or BS in something that will benefit you in the long run.

Education is certainly a calling. While there are some less than perfect teachers, you really have to love what you do in order to keep doing it year after year.

Teachers that earn an education degree through schooling are better respected and better prepared for a classroom than those who go through alternative certification programs. I am not, by any means, saying that good teachers don’t come from alternative certification methods but I believe that is the exception not the rule. If you take education classes you will learn things like method that are hard to pick up on if you are just thrown into a situation where you have to teach and nurse and mother and analyze and etc etc etc. I would go with the schooling to get the education degree.

I’d major and minor in two core subjects, in order to have the best chance at being placed where I prefer. Then get my certificate and take classes for a Masters in summers.

Get your MFA/ or MA too. You might get sick of the brats in high school, so you need a back up plan. With a MA you can teach community college and a 4 yr p/t. The MFA allows you to teach at a 4 yr full-time

The requirements vary from state to state. In my state, you would need to get an education degree, and it would be wise of you to develop proficiency in a number of subject areas to make yourself more marketable, but at the very least you should have one specialty in which you are extremely proficient, which would mean studying hard and taking a lot of classes in the subject that you want to teach.
